Applications Open for the 2021 Diversity in Beer Writing Grant
The dream! Get paid to write about beer.
I realize I’m breaking a rule (that I made up for myself) by posting today, but then I realized there are no rules! So, happy Friday to you all and here’s some very short bonus content from Prohibitchin’ to take into the three-day weekend.
The North American Guild of Beer Writers (NAGBW) is the leading (and maybe only?) national beer media group in the United States. Every year, they offer several Diversity in Beer Writing grants for writers of all levels to write about “stories that can showcase diversity and inclusion – in all its forms and challenges – within beer.” Those who identify as female, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and as a previous recipient, I can wholeheartedly say this is a phenomenal opportunity. Plus, it’s paid; grant recipients receive up to $1,000 for completed work.
You don’t have to be a “known” writer to apply. In fact, I strongly encourage anyone with an idea to consider sending in an application. Bryan Roth, director of the NAGBW, is an outstanding editor and can help shape even the most rudimentary draft into something groundbreaking. And as someone who’s gone through the process, I’m happy to assist with anyone who’d like some guidance or fresh eyes on your application before sending. Just email me with your question(s) and I’ll help in any way I can.
Applications are currently open until Sunday, February 7. Even if you don’t apply, but would like to know more about beer writing, consider joining the NAGBW. I’m a member and personally think it’s a fantastic group of smart, savvy people who are literally shaping the beer industry with fresh coverage from a diversity of voices.
So, if you’re reading this and you wish that the media covered some under-discussed topic relating to beer, stop wishing and start doing: send in your application today. Or by February 7. Either way. Good luck!
